Chinese Embassy in New Zealand Attends 2026 Annual Conference of New Zealand China Friendship Society

Posted on 26 05 202624 06 2026 by Editor

Summary

On 23 May, the New Zealand China Friendship Society held its 2026 annual conference in Whanganui. Yang Wanming, President of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, sent a congratulatory letter; Ambassador Wang Xiaolong delivered a video address; Charge d'Affaires ad interim Xie Yongjun, Consul General He Ying, and Deputy Consul General Wang Junchao attended in person. Former President of the NZCFS Sir Don McKinnon, President Dave Bromwich, Whanganui Mayor Andrew Tripe, and Chair of the New Zealand China Council John McKinnon were also present.

President Yang expressed willingness to deepen people-to-people, local, and youth exchanges between China and New Zealand. Ambassador Wang encouraged carrying forward the spirit of Rewi Alley and leveraging the centenary of Alley's arrival in China next year to advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Charge d'Affaires Xie and Consul General He expressed willingness to utilise the Rewi Alley Memorial Hall in Christchurch to deepen friendship.

The conference theme was 'Friendship Pioneers, Historical Heritage, and Future Vision'. Attendees reviewed the history of friendship and called for deepened exchanges and cooperation.

Commentary

The NZCFS annual conference sent a clear signal of official continued commitment to China-New Zealand friendship. While not a direct policy benefit for local SME owners, it may bring indirect opportunities in the long term. On one hand, high-level statements emphasising people-to-people and local cooperation could provide non-tariff facilitation for New Zealand products entering China, such as through sister-city channels for brand promotion or trust-building.

On the other hand, the inheritance of Rewi Alley's spirit may attract Chinese consumers' interest in the story of China-New Zealand cooperation, aiding emotional marketing for dairy, honey, and other specialty products. However, China's consumer market is becoming more rational; relying solely on friendship narratives cannot replace price competitiveness. Moreover, New Zealand's high export dependence on China means that in case of geopolitical fluctuations, the buffering effect of people-to-people exchanges is limited.

A pragmatic approach is to monitor subsequent concrete cooperation projects, such as youth exchanges translating into e-commerce partnerships or local trade fairs. Overall, this is a positive signal for maintaining relationship warmth, but business decisions should still be based on market fundamentals.

Commentary in Chinese |
