Summary
On 23 May, the 2026 'Chinese Bridge' Chinese Competition Wellington Regional Final was successfully held. The competition was hosted by the Embassy of China in New Zealand and organised by the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington. Tang Yun, Education and Science Counsellor of the Embassy, and Sam Mackay, Deputy Director of International at Victoria University, attended and delivered speeches.
A total of 34 contestants, along with teachers and parents, over 100 people in total, participated. Counsellor Tang Yun thanked all parties for their support and emphasised that the competition promotes China-New Zealand friendship and mutual trust among young people. Deputy Director Mackay encouraged students to learn Chinese well.
The competition selected champions in the primary, secondary, and tertiary school categories, who will go to China to participate in the global finals.
Commentary
Although the Chinese Bridge competition is not a direct commercial activity, its long-term impact cannot be overlooked for New Zealand SME owners. On one hand, the growing enthusiasm for learning Chinese has spurred demand for supporting services such as textbooks, training, and study tours. Local education service providers could explore collaborating with Confucius Institutes to develop Chinese courses tailored for the business community.
On the other hand, the cross-cultural communication skills of the younger generation act as a lubricant for future business cooperation—participating students may become bridges for future China-New Zealand trade, and enterprises can leverage this to build deeper brand affinity. From a risk perspective, if bilateral relations fluctuate, the sustainability of such cultural activities requires attention. Overall, investing in Chinese language education is an investment in future market connections.
SMEs could consider sponsoring or participating in similar events to build a cultural brand image at low cost.

Commentary in Chinese |
