Posted on 15 05 202624 06 2026 by Editor

Summary

On the afternoon of 13 May, the 2026 Wellington District Safe Study Abroad Seminar was held at Victoria University, co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand and the university. Embassy Counsellor Tang Yun and Karen Davis, Deputy Director of Victoria University's International Student Office, attended and delivered speeches. Davis thanked the embassy for its support, emphasising that the university values the wellbeing of Chinese students and will strengthen cooperation to ensure safety.

Tang Yun noted that China is New Zealand's largest source country for international students, encouraged students to enhance safety awareness, uphold the tradition of serving the country through overseas study, and act as ambassadors of China-New Zealand friendship. Representatives from the Embassy's Consular Office, Police Liaison Officer, a detective from Wellington Police, and a psychologist from the Asian Family Services Centre delivered presentations on consular protection, anti-fraud, local public security, and mental health. Over 130 students from Victoria University and Massey University participated, with active interaction and positive feedback that the seminar was highly relevant and beneficial.

Commentary

This seminar signals the continued deepening of education cooperation between China and New Zealand. For New Zealand small and medium enterprise owners, especially those serving international students, it suggests that the number of Chinese students is expected to remain stable or grow,

directly driving consumption in accommodation, catering, and retail sectors. Institutions like Victoria University proactively strengthening safety measures help enhance New Zealand's image as a safe study destination,

maintaining its appeal to Chinese students, thereby providing a more stable customer base for related service industries.
