Chinese Dairy Co-operative Sets New Benchmark for NZ-China Trade

Posted on 15 05 202520 06 2026 by Editor

Summary

In recent years, economic and trade co-operation between New Zealand and China has deepened, with China becoming New Zealand's largest trading partner and bilateral trade growing from NZ$4 billion to nearly NZ$40 billion. As a leading Chinese dairy enterprise, Yili Group has successfully established the world's largest integrated dairy base through its Oceania Dairy base in New Zealand's South Island. The base integrates research, production, deep processing, and market expansion, representing a key achievement in NZ-China economic co-operation.

Yili received approval from New Zealand's Overseas Investment Office in 2013 to acquire equity in Oceania Dairy Limited, with the first phase commencing production in August 2014, quickly surpassing the capacity of most local factories. The then-mayor of Waimate, where the base is located, welcomed Chinese investment. Yili has created numerous local jobs and cultivated talent through scholarship programmes.

The second phase was completed in 2017, adding production lines for 80,000 tonnes of liquid milk, 56,000 tonnes of whole milk powder, and 30,000 tonnes of infant formula packaging annually. Yili invested NZ$25 million in a new laboratory to improve testing efficiency. The company also actively participates in environmental initiatives, such as organising employees for tree planting along the Waihao River.

After over a decade of development, Yili now operates seven production bases in New Zealand and partners with more than 400 farms, making it the largest Chinese dairy investor in New Zealand with the broadest scope of co-operation.

Commentary

Yili's deep presence in New Zealand presents both opportunities and challenges for local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). On the opportunity side, Yili's full-chain investment—from milk sources to production and R&D—indicates strong demand for NZ dairy products in the Chinese market. SMEs could consider supply chain partnerships with large firms like Yili, for example by supplying specialty dairy ingredients or ancillary services.

Yili's community contributions (e.g., scholarships, environmental activities) also enhance the image of Chinese-invested enterprises, potentially creating a more favourable business environment for other Chinese firms entering New Zealand. However, challenges exist: Yili's large-scale production may squeeze the market space of local SMEs, particularly in milk powder and liquid milk. Additionally, fluctuations in Chinese demand or policy changes (e.g., import tariff adjustments) could affect the entire supply chain.

For non-dairy SMEs, Yili's success suggests that deepening NZ-China trade ties may attract more Chinese investment, but heightened competition should be noted. For instance, Chinese capital may enter other agricultural sectors (e.g., meat, fruit), requiring local firms to enhance differentiation. Overall, NZ SMEs should monitor China's consumption upgrade trends, such as demand for high-quality, traceable food, and explore co-operation opportunities with Chinese firms while being wary of rising market concentration risks.

Summary in Chinese |

Commentary in Chinese |
