Li Qiang Holds Telephone Conversation with Vietnamese Prime Minister Li Mingxing

Posted on 16 06 202624 06 2026 by Editor

Summary

On the morning of 15 June 2026, Premier Li Qiang of the State Council held a telephone conversation with Vietnamese Prime Minister Li Mingxing as requested. Both sides expressed their commitment to implementing the consensus reached between the top leaders of the two parties and countries in April this year, and to building a higher-level China-Vietnam community with a shared future. Li Qiang noted that China is willing to work with Vietnam to deeply align development strategies, promote trade expansion and quality improvement, advance infrastructure connectivity, accelerate the construction of cross-border economic cooperation zones, expand cooperation in areas such as energy and minerals, digital economy, artificial intelligence, and finance, jointly run the 'China-Vietnam Tourism Cooperation Year', implement 'small yet smart' livelihood projects, and properly manage and control maritime differences.

He emphasised strengthening coordination in multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, mutually supporting the successful hosting of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meetings this year and next, and safeguarding free trade and economic globalisation. Li Mingxing stated that Vietnam has always regarded relations with China as a strategic choice and top priority, welcomes more Chinese enterprises to invest and do business in Vietnam, and is willing to strengthen multilateral communication and coordination with China.

Commentary

This telephone conversation between the premiers of China and Vietnam sends a clear signal of deepening regional cooperation and safeguarding free trade, and has a bellwether significance for China's economic and trade relations with neighbouring countries. For New Zealand small and medium-sized enterprises, cooperation between China and Vietnam in areas such as infrastructure, digital economy, and artificial intelligence may spawn new supply chain models and technology applications, such as digital cross-border logistics or smart agricultural solutions, which could indirectly affect the competitive landscape of related industries in New Zealand. On the other hand, the emphasis on multilateral coordination and opposition to protectionism by China and Vietnam helps to stabilise the Asia-Pacific trade environment and reduce the uncertainty risks faced by New Zealand exporters.

However, trade facilitation measures between China and Vietnam may attract some investment or orders originally destined for New Zealand to shift to Vietnam, especially in manufacturing and agricultural product processing. Small and medium-sized enterprises should pay attention to the trend of China-ASEAN industrial chain integration, evaluate their differentiated positioning in New Zealand's advantageous areas (such as dairy products, tourism services), and explore market opportunities for cooperation with Vietnam, such as jointly developing the Chinese tourism market.

Commentary in Chinese |
