China’s Housing Market Slump Continues to Hit NZ Log Exports – Timber Home

Posted on 18 03 202520 06 2026 by Editor

Summary

A report by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade indicates that the sustained downturn in China's housing market, with real estate investment falling 10.2% in the first half of last year, has slowed construction activity and severely impacted New Zealand's log exports. China is New Zealand's largest export market, with over 80% of radiata pine logs processed through Chinese ports. Weak consumer confidence and demand have dealt a heavy blow to NZ log exports.

Despite stimulus packages introduced by the Chinese government in May and September, the recovery has been slow. From October to December last year, China's log imports fell 8.8% year-on-year, with the share of NZ radiata pine logs dropping from 54% to 51.4%.

Commentary

The impact of China's housing market downturn on NZ log exports serves as a wake-up call for small and medium-sized business owners in New Zealand. The timber industry is heavily reliant on China's property cycle, and current weak demand is directly pressuring export volumes and prices. From a risk perspective, over-concentration in a single market exposes businesses to systemic risks, and caution is needed regarding the long-term effects of a slower-than-expected recovery in China's property sector.

However, there are also opportunities amid the crisis: China's stimulus policies may gradually boost construction activity, and NZ logs still hold advantages in quality and supply stability. Additionally, businesses can explore diversifying export markets, such as Southeast Asia or the Middle East, or shift towards higher-value products like engineered wood products to reduce dependence on log exports. At the same time, monitoring China's green building trends could create new demand for certified timber.

Overall, short-term challenges are severe, but long-term resilience can be enhanced through market diversification and product upgrading.

Summary in Chinese |

Commentary in Chinese |
