Chinese Dairy Firm Sets New Benchmark for China-New Zealand Economic and Trade Cooperation

Posted on 15 05 202520 06 2026 by Editor

Summary

On 15 May 2025, a report from Reference News highlighted the industrial presence of Chinese dairy giant Yili Group in New Zealand and its exemplary role in China-New Zealand economic and trade cooperation. New Zealand was the first developed country to sign a free trade agreement with China, with bilateral trade growing from NZ$4 billion a decade ago to nearly NZ$40 billion, making China New Zealand's largest trading partner. Since receiving approval in 2013 to acquire Oceania Dairy Limited, Yili has built the Oceania Dairy base in Waimate, South Island.

Phase one commenced production in 2014, and phase two added production lines for 80,000 tonnes of liquid milk, 56,000 tonnes of whole milk powder, and 30,000 tonnes of infant formula packaging annually, along with a new laboratory investment of NZ$25 million. The base has become the world's largest integrated dairy base, encompassing research, production, deep processing, and market expansion, creating numerous local jobs and fostering talent through scholarship programmes. Yili is also actively involved in environmental protection, such as organising tree planting along the Waihao River.

Currently, Yili operates seven production bases in New Zealand and partners with over 400 farms, making it the Chinese dairy company with the largest local investment and broadest cooperation scope.

Commentary

Yili's deep presence in New Zealand presents both competitive pressure and cooperative opportunities for local small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owners. From a competitive standpoint, Yili's full industry chain integration and scale advantages may squeeze SMEs in raw milk procurement and market share, especially its expansion in infant formula and liquid milk capacity, which will intensify competition in the premium dairy market. However, this also opens windows for cooperation: SMEs could consider establishing supply chain relationships with Yili, such as providing specialty milk sources or ancillary services; or focus on differentiated products like organic, grass-fed, or niche dairy items to avoid direct competition.

Additionally, Yili's emphasis on environmental and community investment suggests that SMEs should strengthen sustainable practices to earn trust from local consumers and partners. From a broader perspective, following the upgrade of the China-New Zealand FTA, Chinese demand for New Zealand dairy continues to grow, but market access standards are also rising. SMEs need to monitor changes in Chinese import regulations, such as infant formula registration requirements, to ensure compliance.

Meanwhile, the Yili case shows strong Chinese capital interest in New Zealand agricultural assets; SMEs could explore joint ventures or technical cooperation with Chinese firms, but must carefully assess cultural differences and long-term commitments. Overall, this news reminds New Zealand SME owners that in a globalised supply chain, they must both cope with competition from large enterprises and actively seek niche markets and cooperative opportunities.

Summary in Chinese |

Commentary in Chinese |
