NZ Timber Exports Hit by China Property Downturn: Industry Faces Severe Impact

Posted on 13 02 202520 06 2026 by Editor

Summary

A new report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade shows that the ongoing downturn in China's property market and slowing construction activity have directly affected New Zealand log exports. China's real estate investment has fallen by more than 10.2% over the past year, and New Zealand relies on the Chinese market for over 85% of its radiata pine exports. In the fourth quarter of 2024, China's log imports dropped 8.8% year-on-year, from 9,403.5 thousand cubic metres to 8,575.4 thousand cubic metres.

New Zealand radiata pine accounted for 51.4% of this, about 4,431.7 thousand cubic metres, down from 54% in 2023. Experts predict it may take a year for China's property market to stabilise, posing serious challenges for NZ timber exports. Industry players are calling for attention to market shifts and the pursuit of new export opportunities to diversify markets.

Commentary

This news is a direct negative for NZ timber exporters, but for small and medium-sized business owners in New Zealand, it also provides important market signals. First, the downturn in China's property market is unlikely to reverse in the short term, meaning timber exporters reliant on the single Chinese market face revenue decline risks. The NZ timber industry should accelerate market diversification, for example by expanding into emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and India, or shifting towards higher-value products like engineered wood products to reduce reliance on log exports.

Second, indirectly, the slowdown in China's construction sector may reduce demand for other NZ building materials, but it could also prompt Chinese consumers to focus more on home renovation and environmentally friendly materials, creating new opportunities for NZ specialty timber (e.g., sustainably certified products). Additionally, NZ SMEs can monitor China's 'dual carbon' policy support for green building materials and plan brand promotion early. Finally, supply chain collaboration is crucial; timber processors could partner with NZ construction firms to develop innovative products like prefabricated houses, reducing dependence on a single market.

Overall, the industry needs to proactively adjust strategies rather than passively wait for market recovery.

Summary in Chinese |

Commentary in Chinese |
