Summary

The Qingtian Overseas Chinese Township International Agricultural Product Processing, Storage and Logistics Park is helping agricultural products reach global markets. Xia Xiaoqing, head of Qingtian Zhongzhi Material Trading Co. , received an order from an overseas Chinese in Spain for 25 tonnes of winter bamboo shoots and immediately arranged supply.

Last year, the company exported bayberries to Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Canada and other countries, as well as Qingyuan shiitake mushrooms, Yunhe black fungus, and Jinyun water bamboo. Workers in the park are busy preparing sauced duck for direct flights to Romania and Serbia. The company ships an average of 50 tonnes of agricultural products worldwide each week.

Covering about 330 mu (22 hectares), the park integrates R&D, processing, storage and logistics, functioning as a logistics hub to become an export distribution centre for agricultural products. Seven enterprises have settled in, including projects processing 9,200 tonnes of agricultural products annually and producing 6,250 tonnes of ice cream per year. Qingtian's 381,000 overseas Chinese are spread across 146 countries and regions, with over 20,000 Chinese restaurants abroad employing more than 80,000 people, serving as product distributors.

Last July, 30 tonnes of fresh bayberries were delivered to overseas consumers within 48 hours of picking. Qingtian also sources specialty agricultural products from Sichuan through mountain-sea cooperation to expand trade. Agricultural product exports have been included in a national inspection reform pilot, enabling one-stop customs clearance for non-local products after centralised inspection in Qingtian, with over 40 customs-registered bases across the city.

Qingtian has established an agricultural product testing centre offering free testing and priority inspection services. In 2022, it was selected as one of the first batch of China-Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Zone linkage areas in the province. The company's trade volume grows 20% annually, exceeding US$20 million, and plans to expand into Mexico, South Korea and Southeast Asia this year.

Commentary

For New Zealand SME owners, this news means: the Qingtian model demonstrates how to leverage overseas Chinese networks and one-stop customs clearance to rapidly export agricultural products globally, offering a reference for NZ businesses. NZ agricultural exporters can consider Qingtian as a potential cooperation hub for entering the Chinese market, especially its centralised inspection and customs clearance model that can reduce clearance time and lower trade costs. Meanwhile, Qingtian's overseas Chinese restaurant network abroad could become a distribution channel for NZ beef, lamb, seafood, dairy and other products.

However, competition is intensifying: Qingtian is actively sourcing products from Sichuan and other regions to expand export categories, potentially competing with NZ products in some markets. Additionally, Qingtian's inclusion in the China-CEEC Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Zone linkage area means smoother trade channels with Central and Eastern Europe; NZ businesses could consider using this platform to expand into CEE markets. Overall, Qingtian's agricultural export ecosystem offers new cooperation opportunities for NZ SMEs, but differentiation is key.

As China's agricultural export capacity grows, NZ businesses should strengthen brand and quality advantages to avoid price wars.

Summary in Chinese |
